Sun rewrites the Java plugin

From InfoWorld

The short story:

  • the defining feature is that applets will run on different processes than the browser, so if the applet crashes, the browser will not
  • the ability to choose the version of JRE for a certain applet
  • works better with Vista, as well as IE7 and Firefox 3.
  • they plan to include something like Quickstarter.
  • JNLP running natively on the browser
  • from what I understand, support for other languages, like JRuby
  • reliability and all the other marketing bla bla’s.
  • the update will be available as a beta update for the Java Platform Standard Edition 6 in December.
