StandOut

(yes, CamelCase)

A long time after the announcement, Electric Rain finally releases the StandOut public beta. (As a personal opinion, I think they are moving quite slow, ZAM3D is in CTP for almost two years)

What’s the deal with it?

Well, I’ve always wanted to make a presentation (slideshow) using wpf and abusing the wpf capabilities. Then, when the public is stunned, I would say that I made the presentation using Powerpoint 2010 (I know I’m not original, but..). Using plain old-school wpf (with Blend), there is a little more work than necessary when trying to do a slideshow. Unnecessary work, that could be done by a dedicated software. That’s how StandOut was born.

And yes, people who are close to me already know that I had a similar idea for the Imagine Cup this year, months before StandOut was announced. But this is because a software like that is the natural progress of presentation oriented tools.

Some interesting facts about the system requirements:

  • XP or Vista with .NET Framework 3.0
  • 2.0 Ghz proc.
  • 256 Video (recommended 512)
  • 1 G RAM (recommended 2)
  • Expression Blend

Download here.

I’ll take it for a spin tomorrow. I’m not in the mood now.

I’m curious what will be the pricing for this product, seeing that Swift3D is about 250$, and Microsoft PowerPoint (CamelCase again) is about 230$ (I don’t know how the pricing for Microsoft Office works, I never bought it).

[Later edit]

I just remembered Grava. Grava is the code-name for a set of products from Microsoft targeting educational software. It’s also built on top of WPF and I think you could make some interesting interactive presentations using it (along, of course with the educational things the software is actually targeting). There is only one problem. On the 16th of January, this year, I requested access to the CTP, and I got something like: “We are in the process of preparing our CTP and will have it available in a few weeks”. Now, on the website, “We expect to initiate a wider CTP access program later in 2007“. Bummer.

[Later edit no. 2]

Couldn’t sleep, so I gave it a try. It’s pretty nice (looks and feels a lot like Blend), but I don’t think I could use those kind of “slides” in some of my technical presentations. Take a look at this for instance. Or.. maybe I’ll just do that… Who knows.

Very beautiful, but I think the design and dynamism of the presentation can draw attention away from the contents.

That was one of my opinions, but still, with a good designer (or interactive designer) you can reach the equilibrium between rich content and rich design.
